I made these for a Halloween party in 2008 we went to back when we were still in Italia. The same party I made my Elizabethan Outfits for actually. Yeah, I'm totally a psychotic glutton for punishment. Let's get dressed in two full court outfits AND bake some cupcakes at the SAME TIME!!!
I didn't have time to find black food coloring to make the blades more steel-like so I just left them white but eh, the point was still made I think. I also decided to go with white cake with added red food coloring because although we had red velvet cake mix at the store there, they didn't have any pre-made buttercream icing and well... red velvet cake WITHOUT buttercream icing probably makes the baby Jesus cry.
I didn't have time to take pics before we left the house so these were taken at the party. The icing really wasn't THAT pink, it was a quite lovely peachy/flesh-toned color. They were gone pretty quickly and the kids LOVED them. I'll definitely be making them again at some point.
They were pretty simple to do. Simple make cupcakes (red velvet or white cake with red food coloring to look more like flesh) and cover with icing tinted peachy to look more flesh-toned. Pipe some melted chocolate chips onto some parchment paper and let harden on the counter for a few hours. You could use cake decorating supplies for that, but I used a ziploc baggie with the end snipped off and it worked well enough. Make sure you follow the directions on the bag for the fruit dip and add shortening, otherwise the chocolate might not melt thin enough to pipe out into knife shapes. Once those are dry, stab the cupcakes and add some of that nasty decorater's gel stuff that comes in a tube for blood. Or you could make up some red icing to pipe out randomly but I didn't have time originally.
